Help keep Bayou Highlands Beautiful!

Please join us this coming Saturday October 18,2008 as the Bayou Highlands Neighborhood Association will be holding a walking clean up and encourages any interested neighbors in joining us in a morning walk to promote the beautification and community involvement of our great neighborhood. We will be meeting at 9:00am in the park where Lake Maggiore Boulevard meets Martin Luther King Street. We will provide snacks, water and garbage bags. We will walk in groups of two or three and canvas the neighborhood streets in search of debris and litter. Neighborhood Improvement Movement

Bayou Highlands is applying for the Neighborhood Partnership Lighting Grant to provide 4 more lights in Bayou Highlands Neighborhood Park (Map).

This grant offers dollar matching to volunteer hours donated from neighborhood residents. Volunteer jobs can be things like helping during one of our neighborhood activities like our Annual Fun Day or Halloween Party or simply picking up trash during neighborhood walks.

If you are interested in donating some time or already have volunteer hours to report, please contact Heather Breckenridge at (727)865-1214.

A Note from the NEW President

As some of you may already know, Mary Darling has stepped down from the presidency of Bayou Highlands Neighborhood Association. We would all like to thank her very much for all of her dedication and hard work on behalf of our neighborhood. Mary has been the president for six years and is credited with starting the neighborhood association. During this time she has had many accomplishments in making our neighborhood a better place to live! She was instrumental in the city’s decision to designate the grassy area located on Lake Maggiore Boulevard an official park and applied for and received a grant from the city for the decorative lighting through out the park. She put into effect our annual FUNDAY festivities and so many behind the scene hours of hard work and commitment to Bayou Highlands. Thank you again Mary!
I look forward to serving our neighborhood and continuing to work hard with all of the board members in making Bayou Highlands a great place to call home. If any neighbors have suggestions or comments please don’t hesitate to call me to discuss them.

Fun Day 2008

Scheduled for Saturday, March 29,2008 on Lake Maggiore Blvd. and Sixth Street S. From 8:00am to 2:00pm.
This is our big fundraiser and pays for this newsletter to be printed along with the expenses of running the Association. Please join us by renting a space for $10.00 to sell yard sale items or advertise your business. This will also pay your membership dues for the year.
Do you have a car or boat you would like to display? We are always looking for ways to make this event bigger and better. There are ways you as a neighbor can help make this a success. We are looking for items to raffle, people to volunteer and suggestions on how to make this event better.

We have several events for the children, entertainment, food and yard sale items. The dog show was such a big success we will hold it again this year. Please call Heather to register for a space, information about the event or to volunteer.

Meet Your Neighbors

It’s a good idea to go and introduce yourself to the neighbor on each side of you and maybe even across the street from you and exchange phone numbers. In case of an emergency or if you ever see suspicious activity it’s nice to know someone is looking out for you and your home. Who knows, you might even make a new friend!
This is a simple thing to do and has proven to be effective in crime prevention. It’s a neighborhood watch system that doesn’t take much to enforce. Just try it!

Halloween Party-BOOO!!!!!!

We held our annual Halloween Party October 31st, 5:30 to 7:30 in our park at Lake Maggiore Blvd. and 6th Street. The children and parents alike enjoyed a safe neighborhood BOO party. We had games, candy, music, and a costume and talent contest. Andrea Andersen and family organized the event. Volunteers helped set up and run the games and tables. There were also donations of candy, drinks, baked goods and pumpkins.

Home of the Year Nominee

The City Beautiful Commission has added the Home of the Year Award to their list of awards this year. We are happy to announce that Mr. and Mrs. Amos Hosey at 504 45th Ave. So. were nominated. Congratulations on a great job and for enhancing one of the entrances to our neighborhood! It has truly made a difference in the look of our neighborhood and we thank you!

Let’s Cleanup Our Neighborhood!

The City’s Sanitation Department is scheduled to come into our neighborhood on Monday, May 19th 2008 for the annual pickup. This is a free yearly clean-up provided by the city. Please have your items at the curb by 7am.

This is a great chance to spring clean.

National Neighborhood Day

CONA along with City of St. Petersburg celebrated National Neighborhood Day on Sep 16th, 2007 with an old-fashioned Picnic at Dell Holmes Park. While National Neighborhood Day is in its third year nationally, this was St. Petersburg’s first year to celebrate.

Thanks to all for joining us this past Saturday, March 31st, 2007 for our day of food, fun and getting to know your neighbors.

A big thanks go out to all the volunteers. This includes Adrienne Thomas, our face painter, along with Heather Breckenridge who at the moonwalk and everyone who helped with the children’s activities. If you'd like to find out how to help next year please call Mary 865-1621.

Raffle tickets were sold for $1 each and many great prizes were given away including free massages from Tranquility Day Spa and Suzanne Ferrara with Tampa Bay Chiropractic. The fire department also donate five great bikes that were won by five great kids.

The police department distributed clubs to the owners of the top 5 stolen models of cars.

Jessica put on another regal dog parade for fun and prizes. Call Jessica at 864-1214 for information on how to treat your pet right.

Neighborhood Grant APPROVED

We worked hard and submitted a grant to the city to get decorative lighting along Lake Maggiore Blvd. To receive the grant of $25,000 we had to match it with volunteer hours. Thank you to everyone who signed up to volunteer and to the board for completing the grant. I am happy to announce that we did receive the grant. This will be phase one and includes the installation of 8 lights. Our goal is to light the whole Blvd. from MLK St to 4th street south. The lights have a white globe on a black decorative pole. They will add lighting and charm to the area. We are also working on having the medians on Lake Maggiore Blvd. reclassified as park land.

Congratulations President of the Year!

Congratulations are in order for our very own Neighborhood Association President Mary Darling, who has won President of the Year in the prestigious St. Petersburg Neighborhood Partnership Awards.

Thanks to Donna Porterfield who submitted the following information about Mary on the awards application:

List and briefly describe accomplishments

In the short seven years that Mary has been a resident of St. Petersburg she has done so much! After working 10 hours a day as a nurse, she somehow finds the time to do the following: She not only completed the St. Petersburg CONA Leadership Program in 2002, she has been mentoring in the program ever since. Twice she has attended the state-wide Neighborhood conference; once in Tampa, and the other time in Sarasota. She is very active in politics by being a Tiger Bay member, the Precinct Captain of District 109 for two years and she served two years as Vice Chair for District 55. Her political functions constantly keep her busy with meetings, fundraisers, and making telephone calls. During the elections she has the job of deputy at the polls. Councilman James Bennett presented Mary with the Sunshine Ambassador Award on behalf of the City of St. Petersburg at our neighborhood Fun Day event last year. She was just accepted to be on the St. Petersburg Beautification Committee. Mary has completed the 8 classes with the St Pete Police Departments Citizens Community Policing Academy, learning how the different departments operate. She has volunteered for the Coquina Key Resource Center, the St. Petersburg Albert Whitted Air Show, St. Petersburg Times Festival of Reading, and First Night. She is an active member in her church and sings in the choir. Mary not only came up with the idea of a musical celebrating the 100th anniversary of the church, she also produced it. She was active in the theater in Michigan for seventeen years.

Why do you feel your nominee should be selected as “President of the Year?”

Mary has done an outstanding job during the past six years of being president, helping our new association get to where we are today. Mary is a pleasant, concerned, outgoing person. She enjoys working and talking with people. With her friendly personality, she certainly makes new people feel welcomed into the neighborhood. Mary has been such an asset to our neighborhood association, writing grant applications to get our neighborhood signs, and to have park benches and waste cans installed, as well as writing the grant for the Police Dept. Forfeiture Fund. She always makes sure any project deadlines are met. She sets up the yearly Neighborhood Cleanups, sponsored by the City and our neighborhood organization. She organizes our yearly “Neighborhood Fun Day”, an event that includes yard sale tables, personal wares, games, food and fun! Mary loves to man the children’s face painting table! She is the crime watch coordinator for our neighborhood. She creates our newsletters and composes a president’s message on all of them. She lines up speakers for all of our monthly meetings. She is constantly striving to improve and enhance our neighborhood and bring new ideas to our neighborhood association. By her being active in so many activities, and getting to know so many people, she has acquired numerous relationships which are beneficial to our neighborhood as well, such as assisting us to get new lighting and curbs installed. Mary is always there keeping us focused and working towards our goals to get things done. She is endlessly enthusiastic about whatever project she is undertaking and makes certain that it is always a fun time for all. This is why the board members of the Bayou Highlands Neighborhood Association have unanimously agreed that Mary well deserves to be President of the Year, which you may see by the attached letter of support.

I would like to welcome all new residents to the neighborhood! I worked the polls for the first time on Sept. 5th. It was wonderful to see people come out to vote. We live in a free country but we should never take it for granted. Many have fought and died for this freedom throughout the years. November 7th is the general election and will decide who will run our state as well as our country. Please exercise your right to vote. See you at the polls!
